The Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market Tsukiji-shijo, commonly known as "Tsukiji Jonai," closed its gates on October 6, 2018, after 83 years of operation.
This series of photographs captures "Tsukiji Jonai" about two years before its relocation. Although the market had to be moved to Toyosu due to concerns that it was "old, cramped, and dangerous," many elements of "Tsukiji Jonai" represent a condensation of customs and know-how cultivated over many years.
While the people involved in the market and the fish and produce it handles remained unchanged after the move to Toyosu, the architecture, storefronts, and facilities have disappeared.
I have carefully documented these vanished elements, seeking to capture the faces and traces of the people who lived and worked there for 83 years.
