Volcanoes? Volcanoes! is a series of three photobooks moving between the real, the imagined, and the reproduced.
In 2022, Fire of Love introduced the artist to Katia and Maurice Krafft, volcanologists who devoted their lives to studying volcanoes and died while observing an eruption. The series follows their sense of devotion and their desire to stand before the earth remaking itself, carrying that encounter through photography, drawing, and print.
Episode 1 is photographed handheld on 35mm film—CineStill 800T and Kodak Portra 800—at Kīlauea, Hawaii, during an active eruption.
Episode 2 consists of abstract pastel drawings: imagined volcanoes carried through memory and longing, made both before and after witnessing the eruption.
Episode 3 uses Risograph printing to translate the formation and movement of lava into planes of layered color.
Together, the three books move between standing before fire, carrying its image within, and bringing it back into the world.
