Sergio Larrain, an artist known for his seclusion, had a relatively short career in photography before he retreated to the Chilean countryside in the late 1960s to focus on meditation. However, he is widely acclaimed for his innovative approach and the unpolished imagery he captured across Europe and Latin America. One of his most renowned projects is Valparaíso, which he started in 1957 while traveling with poet Pablo Neruda for Du magazine. Although the photographs were not published until 1991, Larrain had already created his own version of the book's layout, reflecting his artistic vision. This facsimile has now been beautifully produced for the first time in book form, featuring text by Pablo Neruda and correspondence between Larrain and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Valparaíso represents the long-awaited release of this rare and celebrated body of work.
