The Universe Doesn’t Know — Rie Suzuki
Publisher: photobook_daydream_editions, 2025
Format: Saddle-stitched softcover
Dimensions: 10 × 7.63 inches
Pages: 64
Edition: First Edition of 50
Publisher’s Statement
“The 8th title from photobook_daydream_editions and the 21st solo publication by Rie Suzuki was a total dream for me, as I’ve been in love with Rie’s beautiful and singular work for over a decade. An elegant and slightly off-kilter collection of photographs set to the sounds of piano-bar jazz, new romantic, and space-age pop.”
Artist’s Statement (Japanese / English)
English Translation:
There is a story told without words.
It is neither a dream nor telepathy, yet its form slowly emerges, like a star map.
Softly unfolding imaginings, attending to deep sorrow and quiet tremors, carry me as I slip through the spaces of light, dancing along their paths.
A gaze drawn toward beauty—and toward inklings not yet named—quietly guides the positions of the stars.
Across time and place, a single star map was drawn. Within it, the vase in my childhood home, the scent of the city’s sea, brief moments while traveling, and even the dog of a friend who lives far away appear as tiny points of light.
Even without knowing each other’s pasts, Andrew and I formed the same constellations.
Light drifts and flickers, a floating cluster.
To be able to draw such a star map—the universe doesn’t know yet.
