The Microcosm in Memory by Masaya Inoue
Published by photobook_daydream_editions,2025
First edition of 50 copies
Hardcover, 297 × 210 mm, 92 pages
“The Microcosm in Memory” is the second book by Tokyo-based photographer Masaya Inoue following his self-published 「お呪い」in 2023. The photographs depict the unnatural of the natural, the spiritual realms of sci-fi: a Rohrschach of the physical world. Mirror images are laid out sequentially at both ends of the book meeting at the center Torii through lanes, portals, tunnels, and screens. An isolated plant in concrete becomes the animation on a monitor, statues transform into shadowy figures, and the end turns into the beginning: then we shall see the view of the world we were supposed to see.
"The shock there taught me how to survive yourself.
Darkness has not yet been lost from there.
The brightness is also starting to enter.
Why do we see and don’t know at the same time?
A weathering moment just to look at –
no sound, no one can get it.
I want you to keep it unclear
because I want to see it with these eyes."
