Carlos Altamirano is a visual artist born in Chile in 1954. Altamirano began his artistic career as a printmaker but quickly expanded his visual practice to include sculpture, video, photography, and collage. He held his first solo exhibition in 1976, and starting in 1977, he was part of the Chilean avant-garde scene known as "la avanzada," alongside artist Carlos Leppe and art critic Nelly Richard. In the 1980s, Altamirano engaged in various actions opposing the military regime, critiquing the conventional language of art and the history of Chilean art.
His latest publication, "Ah! Los Días Felices" [AH! Those Happy Days] by Carlos Altamirano, is characterized by its visual experimentations through the use of archival material such as photographs, typescripts, and press clippings. The book is divided into two parts: the first section is sustained by a thread of photographs, statements, and news materials from 1977. The second part employs a similar concept, intertwining archival photographs with 40 accounts of missing detainees from the Chilean military regime (1971-1981). Altamirano had a high degree of control over the type of paper used, the page layout, and graphic design.
"AH! Los Días Felices" was published in conjunction with OchoLibros Editores in 2014 and exhibits all the characteristics of a great artist's book.
