Phosphenes by Viktorija Makauskaitė
Photobook Daydream Editions, 2026
Softcover, 108 pages
9.84 × 6.93 inches
First edition of 50
The 10th release from Photobook Daydream Editions, Phosphenes explores perception, memory, and place through a tactile, interdisciplinary approach. Its title refers to the flashes and patterns of light seen without external stimulus—an apt metaphor for Makauskaitė’s intuitive and spatial way of working.
A Lithuanian artist based in Tokyo, Viktorija Makauskaitė draws on her background in architecture to navigate the relationship between people and their environments. Working across photography, drawing, craft, and text, she creates quiet, layered works that reflect on connection—between the self and place, the lived and the imagined.
Her recent focus on handmade books has led to presentations across Japan and internationally. Her publication Getting Feet Wet was shortlisted for the Authors’ Books Award at the Rencontres d’Arles, France, in 2025.
Phosphenes
My borrowed self
Retreats to a flower
To feed on the dust rains
Dizzy from color
I regain my exposure
As the transient audience fades
This limerence was contagious
Only I cling to concrete fences
They respond like you would
Grass glows shadows hollow
Plastic cones hum the game rules
I photograph them too often
I overshare
Splashing the phosphenes
Here and there
