This book dummy is a similar one that won the European Publishers Award in 2010, which Martín Weber returned the night before the award was to be presented in protest because the publisher proposed eliminating the photographs of the middle class to reduce the size and costs of the book.
It is a version with a cloth-bound, hand-silkscreened cover (the silkscreening was done by the silkscreen department at Pratt), and the design did not include a photographic image on the cover as the final publication but instead focused on colors and typography design. Only three dummies of this version were made.
“Map of Latin American Dreams” presents the first anthology of one photographer’s odyssey, bringing together his diaries and reminiscences. This seminal critique is more than just a collection of photographs. Empowering his subject with small, wooden blackboards and chalk, Weber’s photographs become not just a collection of dreams, but hopes, wishes and elucidations.
Set against the historical, political and social contexts of eight countries, Map of Latin American Dreams is a selection of 110 carefully staged scenes. From its golden cover to the preface’s silver negatives inside, the book is an open invitation to a journey from El Dorado to the ’New World’, all the while reflecting on the relationship between history and photographic practice.
Martín Weber has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the International Award in Photography by CRAF/Italy (2019), the Grand Prize on Installations and Alternative Media in Argentina (2016), the Silver Eye Award (2008), and the Fundación Klemm Prize (1999). He has also been the recipient of grants from prestigious organizations such as the Prince Claus Fund (2004), the Guggenheim Foundation (1998), the Magnum Foundation Fund (2018), and the No Strings Foundation (2005), among others. Weber has participated in artist residencies at MAC and D21 Santiago/Chile (2014), CPW/Woodstock (2004), Light Work/Syracuse (2002), and IASPIS/Stockholm (1998).
