Description

Luigi Ghirri: Infinite Landscapes is the first solo museum exhibition in Asia dedicated to the work of Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992). Held from July 3 to September 28, 2025, at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the exhibition celebrates the museum’s 30th anniversary.

The catalog features approximately 130 photographs, spanning Ghirri’s early series such as Kodachrome and Still Life. It includes images of landscapes from his birthplace of Reggio Emilia, travel destinations, artist studios, reflections, artworks, signs, posters, and scenes viewed through windows and mirrors.

A special highlight of the exhibition is the inclusion of works and archival materials related to Paola Borgonzoni (1954–2011), Ghirri’s wife and collaborator, who played a pivotal role in his creative process—particularly in publishing and graphic design.

Rather than merely replicating reality, Ghirri’s photographs are presented as visual fragments—capturing the everyday, the mundane, and the poetic. His work explores the relationship between image and reality, presence and absence, and the external world and inner vision. Through this unique framing, Ghirri constructs what he called “infinite landscapes”—landscapes not only of physical terrain, but also of perception and experience.
