Sabiha Çimen spent three years photographing girls’ Quran schools across five cities in Turkey—a subject she knows intimately, having attended these schools herself as a teenager alongside her twin sister. After becoming a photographer, she returned to these spaces to develop the project that has now become her first book.
The title Hafiz refers to someone who has memorized all 604 pages of the Holy Quran. This tradition dates back to the time of Muhammad. The memorization process can take up to four years and is typically undertaken by girls between the ages of eight and nineteen. Today, there are thousands of Quran schools across Turkey.
This world has rarely been captured with such intimacy. Çimen’s close connection to the culture allows each photograph to reveal a different facet—offering a deeper understanding of the daily lives, inner worlds, and aspirations of these young women.
