Tetsuta Tsurumoto explores the “wave of words” that surrounds him and us, as well as the realm of “play” that is sometimes glimpsed through the cracks between these waves.
When I left my hometown and moved to Tokyo, the overwhelming bombardment of unexperienced words and commercial images transformed into a question: “Are human beings made of words?” The production process began with my own notes on this question. I then pasted the words I had written in my notes onto photographs I had taken aimlessly and without planning, as if to overwrite them. Gradually, this process evolved into a form of aimless play, reminiscent of a child’s activity, where moving one’s hands and perceiving the world through the body became a way to faintly experience a child’s perspective, free from the words and commercial images that surround us.
Japan has increasingly moved away from the culture of kanji, continuing to produce atmospheric words that resemble sounds. These atmospheric words and images, often not indigenous to the culture, are always unexperienced and change at an accelerating pace. Such a “wave of words” limits our choices about the world. Through physical movement and aimless “play,” I explore the possibility of reclaiming our agency in these times. The book and exhibition are the results of this process.
The use of 「ウ」「ォ」「ー」and other elements in the titles reflects the act of decomposing words through phonetic expressions unique to the Japanese language.
鶴本哲太は自身、そして私たちに取り巻く「言葉の波」、またその波の隙間から時々垣間見せる「遊び」の領域を探求している。
日々浴び続ける、膨大な未体験な言葉や商業的なイメージにどこか束縛されているような感覚は、私が地元を離れ東京に移動した時「人間は言葉でできている。」という問いへと変化する。制作はその問いへの自身のメモから始まり、さらにメモに綴った言葉を無目的、無計画にただ撮影した写真を上書きするように貼る。そのプロセスは次第に手を動かすということ、身体を通して世界を見ること、のように子供の遊びに似た、偶発的な出来事から始まる無目的な遊びに変わり自身を取り巻く言葉や商業的なイメージから解放された子供の視点を微かに感じるきっかけとなった。
漢字という文化を捨て、音のような雰囲気的な言葉を生産し続ける日本。文化として土着しない雰囲気的な言葉やイメージは常に未体験であり
加速し移ろう。そのような「言葉の波」は私たちの世界に対する選択を閉ざしてしまう。身体を動かし、無目的な「遊び」を通して
私たちの時代を選択するきっかけを探る。制作した本や展示はそのプロセスから出来上がったものである。
タイトルに使用している「ウ」「ォ」「ー」やその他のアプローチは日本語独特の表音表現による言葉の分解行為です。
