In the summer of 1977, Cy Twombly began working on a "painting in ten parts" inspired by Alexander Pope's translation of Homer's Iliad. Completed in 1978 and collectively titled Fifty Days at Iliam, these works evoke incidents from Homer's epic poem through Twombly's characteristic fusion of words and images.

The ten large canvases unfold sequentially, resembling a developing narrative. They are titled as follows:

  1. Shield of Achilles

  2. Heroes of the Achaeans

  3. Vengeance of Achilles

  4. Achaeans in Battle

  5. The Fire That Consumes All Before It

  6. Shades of Achilles, Patroclus, and Hector

  7. House of Priam

  8. Ilians in Battle

  9. Shades of Eternal Night

  10. Heroes of the Ilians
