Since 2011, Umihara has been traveling by long-distance Greyhound buses that crisscross the United States, filling in the map as he goes. In the U.S., long-distance railroads did not develop, and bus routes developed. However, with the development of airports, airplanes are now the primary means of long-distance travel. Buses have become a means of transportation for those who did not choose to fly for their own reasons, providing a glimpse into the diversity of the U.S. as a country.

In 2017, Umihara published Whispering Hope, a collection of photographs taken from bus windows, portraits of passengers, bus stops and terminals, and text, which was awarded “The Best Photography" at the international photography festival "Photo España" in Madrid In 2019, he will hold an exhibition of the same name at IG Photo Gallery. While the "Whispering Hope" exhibition featured prints, "Bus" will feature works projected on the gallery walls in a slideshow format.

The subjects are landscapes through the windows, passing scenes, and people passing by, providing viewers with a visual experience of traveling on a bus. The exhibition venue will be transformed into the interior of the bus, and the audience will be invited to imagine outside of it, using the framed world as a cue. What do you see when you look at the world's leading superpower from the street? We invite you to experience it at the exhibition site.
