IG Photo Gallery is pleased to present Weekend, a solo exhibition by Victor Sira, opening on July 7, 2026. Victor Sira, originally from Venezuela and based in New York, is an artist working across photography, video, and artist books. This marks Sira’s fifth solo exhibition at the gallery since his first presentation in Japan in 2022. Held annually in July, these exhibitions have become an ongoing tradition. “Weekend” brings together photographs made between 2025 and 2026 in New York, New Jersey, Montreal, and Japan. While the images may initially appear as unassuming snapshots, the artist’s selection of subjects and his attentive gaze toward the landscape reveal a deeper, more contemplative layer of meaning. A coffee cup resting on a diner table, a campsite mid-setup, the back of a figure standing before a sheer cliff, a smartphone placed on a car dashboard while in motion—these are everyday scenes, yet the images draw the viewer’s attention. They speak not through words, but through a visual language that resists simple description. At first glance, the title “Weekend” might suggest a straightforward record of weekends captured in snapshot form. However, the artist’s interest does not lie solely in the routines of daily life. Beyond what is visible within the frame lies another reality—one that we, as contemporaries, also share. The photographs were made between 2025 and 2026, during a period marked by the beginning of President Trump’s second term in the United States. Domestically, divisions deepened as hostility toward immigrants intensified, while internationally, forceful policies unfolded, including the detention of foreign leaders and the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Such realities are not directly depicted in “Weekend.” What we see instead are images drawn from the artist’s private moments. Yet, when viewed attentively, traces of the time seem to seep into the photographs, allowing the shadow of the era to emerge from within the frame. Sira is also highly regarded as a maker of artist books and is deeply engaged in how images are sequenced and structured. In this exhibition, adjacent photographs come together to form a cohesive world that the viewer can enter. Although separated by the Pacific Ocean, the United States and Japan are connected through the immediacy of mass media and the internet. As contemporaries breathing the same air, we are all confronted with the question of how to live in the present moment. Through Sira’s gaze, this exhibition offers an entry point for reflecting on our own “weekends.” Additionally, on Saturday, July 11, a live online talk session will be streamed from the gallery.
